The elevator or lift is one of the lifting devices which carry humans or objects between the storeys, floors, or boards of buildings, ships, mines or other structures in an elevator cage or walkway moving between guide rails fixed on a track steeper than 30°. Elevators are usually driven by electric motors, with its power transmitted to the elevator through a cable system combined with counterbalances or by means of hydrostatical drive. For the latter, the motor directly drives a pump and the high-pressure liquid flow provided by it moves the piston of a working cylinder. The architectural regulations prescribe installation of lifts above a certain number of floors.
